How They Work

When your nostrils receive the aroma molecules, signals are sent to the limbic system of the brain. This system is the control center for emotions and memory. This is why the scent of certain essential oils can be directly attributed to increased feelings of euphoria including peace, joy, contentment and excitement.

Not only that, the limbic system is also connected to other parts of the brain related to stress such as blood pressure, heart rate, breathing, and hormone regulation. the limbic system with healing essential oils balances emotions and the functions that the limbic system controls.

How To Use Them

If you’re new to using essential oils, enjoying them aromatherapeutically is a good way to start. Here are some ways to use essential oils for treating stress through aromatherapy:

  • Burn a high-quality candle infused with essential oil.
  • Use an aromatherapy diffuser to spread the oil’s scent in the room (or car!)
  • Inhale directly by rubbing a few drops in your hands, and cupping your hands to your face.
  • Mix essential oils with an unscented carrier oil (ex. Almond oil) to wear on your body.
  • Pour a few drops into a warm bath.
