No nine to five, no problem!

Business man escape from routine office life

No nine to five, no problem!

It’s time to get out of the rat race and drop that nine-to-five. I know it sounds scary, but I promise it’s not.

The standard American eight-hour work day commonly referred to as the nine to five, was originally established in 1869 through the “National Eight Hour Law proclamation.” [3] This law was created to ensure that the average minimum wage employee would experience eight hours of work, eight hours of recreation and eight hours of rest. This law may have worked in 1869, but over the last century as a society we have learned how to optimize our time and production.

We have all heard the phrase “work smarter not harder” or some variation. Since 1869 we have come a long way in doing just that – working smarter. The smarter we become as a society the more inefficienta nine to five becomes. When working a salaried nine to five position, people know they get paid the same amount for doing the bare minimum or for going the extra mile, this reduces efficiency. Also, people begin to feel trapped like they are missing out on their lives because a nine to five allows for no flexibility. In today’s society we can work and live in the now. Outside of a nine to five you no longer have to sacrifice a career to have a family or explore the world.[2] I know most of us could never image the freedom to design our own schedule, but what if we could? There are several entrepreneurial avenues that make this easier than ever. Take the industry of network marketing, this industry provides an endless income opportunity while allowing you to design your ideal work schedule. Don’t get me wrong, all success demands hard work and drive, but why not push yourself in doing something you love and on your own time.

When you ditch the nine to five you also get to ditch the cubical and boring office. When you take on an entrepreneurial path, you will find you have the ability not only to work on your schedule, but the ability to work remotely from wherever you desire. Whether this means you can work from the comfort of your own home, a coffee shop down the street or a tropical destination. On top of a desirable work location and schedule, there is an additional benefit most neglect to consider when leaving their nine to five, they no longer have a commute. In ditching the commute and the office altogether you often experience an immediate cost savings. With no commute you no longer need to pay for gas or train tickets and with no office there is no need to have two sperate wardrobes or eating lunches out daily. I don’t know about you but saving money while working whenever and wherever I want sounds like a win, and a risk I am willing to take.

Lastly, and possibly the most important reason to ditch that nine to five is…your happiness. In life, time is the most valuable asset and it should be spent in a way you feel it can bring you the most happiness. In the words of  Jacob Laukaitisa man who recently abandoned a nine to five to pursue his dreams of becoming and entrepreneur; “People are much happier when they’re living where they want and spending their time doing things they’re passionate about.”[2] If there are opportunities out there that allow us to be in charge of our happiness, time and income we should all be taking advantage.

Taking that first step out of your comfort zone is always the hardest, but it doesn’t have to be.
