Fad diet… You mean bad diet!

Fad diet… You mean bad diet!

South Beach Diet, Cabbage Soup Diet, Grapefruit Diet, Alkaline Diet, Atkins Diets, Keto Diets, Zone Diet, Cookie Diet, Juice Diet… I could go on and on for days and days naming all of the fad diets that have taken over society at one point or another. Each fad diet contains their version of the promises to make everyone and anyone lose weight fast, offering up a “quick fix”. The truth is none of them ever work long term. The only real way to change your health is to change your lifestyle. In order to change your lifestyle, you need to change your daily habits which takes time and effort.

I know, not what everyone wants to hear… time and effort! However, it doesn’t have to be that hard. It’s all about making small changes while keeping your health front and center.

First things first, set goals when it comes to both food and exercise. It is important that you start with realistic goals. You may not loose 20 pounds in month one it may only be 5 pounds; you want to be mindful of setting goals you can achieve. It is the same when it comes to exercise, if you haven’t exercised in year maybe don’t start with the goal to run 5 miles every day but rather a goal to walk around the block every day. With each goal accomplishment you are starting to train your body and mind of new healthy everyday habits. It is important to remember to be kind to yourself and not deprive or overwork yourself right from the beginning. If you are too hard on yourself, it will create frustration and most likely wind up with you giving up on your plan which will create the inability to achieve your goals.

Now that you have a plan of action, you want to be sure you arm yourself with the tools you need to succeed. The most important key to your success with be the ability to eat a balanced diet. Most fad diets have you only consuming just one thing consistently or restricts an entire food group. This type of diet is unrealistic and not healthy. When you participate in these unrealistic fad diets your body can experience some severe consequences such as dehydration, digestive problems, tiredness, and malnutrition. [2] On top of how these diets negatively impact your body, these diets also become boring and mundane making them extremely hard to stick to. A well balance diet that eaten in right proportions will create the healthy lifestyle you need to succeed. If you are not sure how to get started or what a balanced diet truly is? We suggest checking out guided meal plans such as the one listed here, or research and educate yourself on the ideal nutrition for your body through credited sources such as health.gov.

At this point you have your goals in place and have started to make small healthy changes in your diet and habits, WAY TO GO! Now it is important to remember we all have good days and bad but in order to set yourself up for long-term success you want to start eliminating your bad days which are often cause by “triggers”. Triggers are the things in your life that can derail you from achieving your goals or cause you to make poor choices for your mind and body. Triggers can be anything from stress, sadness, anger, relationships… etc. For example, do you find yourself eating after you had a stressful day at work, or when you fight with a partner do you suddenly have the desire to eat ice cream? These could be triggers which cause you to eat in a way which you would normally. Triggers can also be less obvious such as your schedule. If you are thrown off from your daily schedule do you not work out, or find yourself having a late-night snack? Whatever your trigger may be, there are many ways to start identifying them. One way is to keep a journal/diary in which you tack your food, activity and how you are feeling. Recording this information can help point out what causes you to stray from your plan. Once you begin realizing these triggers you can start to change how you react. Instead of grabbing a snack maybe you now go for a walk or listen to your favorite song. Or if you notice you don’t workout unless you do it in the morning, be sure to set your alarm so you always get it in.
